Common capabilities are provided throughout the computer spectrum from desktop processors to enterprise-wide systems. Each M implementation is tailored to its host environment, delivering exceptional performance. The ISO standard includes statements on portability, identifying the minimum set of requirements which all M implementations must meet. The Language M[UMPS] has been an ANSI standard since 1977, with updates in 1984, 1990, and 1995. The identical standard has been adopted by ISO, BSI and FIPS. A worldwide

Extractions: Who says that you can't use M[UMPS], because you have to use Object Oriented Technology? How often have we heard this? And how true is it? Now that I'm no longer the Chairman of the MDC (Art Smith has gracefully accepted the challenge to take the lead for a couple of years, see his column elsewhere in this issue), I would like to throw in a column with a bit more bite than usual. Some of the issues that I will raise in this column will cause some discussion, and that is exactly what I intend to do: make us all aware that it is time to re-examine what we're doing, and emphasize those aspects of programming that will help us continue to be successful. There are lots of pieces of existing software that will continue to be as valuable as they ever were, and there are new ways of using familiar resources. I would like to offer the following thoughts as a start to re-evaluate the way in which we can make use of the language M[UMPS]. Well, let's start at the beginning: working in an object oriented fashion is certainly a good idea. But does M[UMPS] really preclude the usage of object oriented practices? I don't think so.
M[UMPS] Commands MUMPS Commands. OPEN For a program that parses a programming language, it is hard to see the difference between http://www.jacquardsystems.com/Examples/command/open.htm
Extractions: Introduced in the 1977 ANSI M[UMPS] language standard. Clarifications (no change intended) in a future ANSI M[UMPS] language standard: When a device is currently "OPEN", and another OPEN command is issued by the process that "owns" the device, and in the later OPEN command the device parameters are different than in the original one, the system will behave as if the device is virtually CLOSEd and then re-OPENed with the new parameters. If the new parameters are incompatible with the device, error processing will occur "as usual". Any keywords in the argument of the command are processed in strict left-to-right order. When multiple equivalent parameters are encountered, the last occurrence processed will define the action(s) to be taken. For examples, see the examples with the USE command. Additions in a future ANSI M[UMPS] language standard. The ability to specify "user-defined" mnemonicspace s is added. It will be possible to specify to an implementation to use entries in a specific routine (let's call it USER for the purpose of this discussion) for the processing of the commands OPEN USE and CLOSE and the various controlmnemonic s for specific combinations of device and mnemonicspace When this feature is active, the
